Like most of our Twitter friends we are huge fans of these sexy vampires and we've been waiting patiently (not!) to sink our teeth into the 7th book in the series…Oliver’s Hunger. So we thought we’d have a little chat with Tina, ahead of it’s release March 31, to find out her inspiration behind the awesome series.

First things first, what or who inspired you to write the Scanguards Vampires Series?
Actually, I had the idea when I saw Tony Soprano (The Sopranos) go to the shrink. I figured if a mob boss could see a shrink, so could a vampire…that’s how the idea for my first Scanguards book was born. I had to give Samson (Samson’s Lovely Mortal) something interesting to do though, so I decided to make him the owner of a security/bodyguard company. I liked the idea of this contrast between saving human lives and being a vampire.

Who do you see playing the characters of your HOT Scanguards men?
Pretty much any tall, dark and handsome actor!
For Amaury (Amaury’s Hellion), I once saw an actor, Cheyenne Jackson, in a film. He had the most brilliant blue eyes I’d ever seen and his eyes were exactly how I imagined Amaury’s to be. Although, he did have short hair, but that’s not a problem, they can just make him a nice long mane!
There are lots of choices for the rest of the characters, I’m sure, but I so rarely go to the movies so I’m not as familiar with the latest hot actors!

Will there be any more books after Oliver’s Hunger?
Yes, absolutely!! I’m hoping to write Thomas and Eddie’s story. Cain will also get his book and then there are still other characters, Blake and Wesley for instance, and who knows…I might just bring other minor characters, from previous books, back.

Would you consider writing a spin off series of Scanguards?
There’s always the potential, particularly since Scanguards has offices in other cities too, but for now there are still plenty of characters I want to explore in this series.

At what age did you begin writing?

I was thirteen when I penned my first little mystery. But I stopped and didn't get back to writing for over twenty years.

And lastly, a question we always ask… who are your favourite authors?
I have too many to mention here: Lara Adrian and Kresley Cole for sure, many historical authors and also some indie authors, like Grace Callaway.

The Interview

Where and who, was your first encounter as a submissive and how old were you? How did you feel afterwards?
My first proper (or possibly improper) encounter was with a guy I dated casually at university, I was 19 or so. He spanked me with my hair brush and it was wonderful - surprising and oddly euphoric at the moment my brain went from "ow, this really hurts, more more than I expected it would" to "oooooooh that's really lovely" as the endorphin rush kicked in. I'd known D/s was something I liked the idea of from a lot younger (even going back to age ten or so I knew I was fascinated by people being tied up and held captive in books or on TV) but it wasn't a sexual thing until then.

What was the most extreme reaction, positive and negative, you've had from someone when you told them you were a submissive?
Most extreme positive reaction was being asked to write a book about it all (I really didn't expect THAT!). Most negative was someone I toyed with dating and was at that flirty "chatting to and about sex" stage - I mentioned I had slept with women and enjoyed D/s in the bedroom and his reaction bordered on disgust on both fronts. That was proof, if it felt like any were needed, that we were very ill suited!

What is your advice to someone wanting to try a submissive role?
Have a good chat with the person who is going to dominate you beforehand. If you're too embarrassed to do it in person do it by text or email. But make sure both you and they know what is on and off limits. Sort out a safeword and take things slowly. Trust me, if you're experimenting and it turns out this is something you DO like, you won't want to rush any of the discoveries. And whether it's for you or not, taking your time when doing something intense is definitely a good thing.

As a professional working woman and best-selling author what are you're favourite pastimes? 
I watch way too much TV. I don't have time to watch week by week, so I tend to buy a box set then devour it. I've just watched thirteen episodes of House of Cards in three nights (brilliant stuff!). Otherwise I love board games and comics and cooking. I find baking very therapeutic and at the moment am going through a phase of trying to bake different types of bread with varying degrees of success.

What type of books do you like to read and who is your favourite author?
I read lots of different things - I have a Kindle and Kindle software on my iPhone and iPad so I can pick up where I left off whenever I get a few spare minutes. I enjoy biographies, pop culture/sociology books, chick lit and smut.
Favourite authors (never trust anyone who can pin it down to one!) depending on my mood include Tamar Cohen, Tiffany Reisz, Sophie Kinsella and Jojo Moyes.

Can you tell us about any new projects you're working on?
The sequel to Diary of a Submissive, No Ordinary Love Story, is out in the UK on March 28. It follows on pretty much from the end of book one and is - in my opinion, at least - both ruder and more romantic than book one. I'm doing a fair amount promoting that at the moment, but otherwise I'm continuing my day job and pondering ideas for a third book. 

If you could invite anyone to dinner, past or present, who would it be?
John Lennon, and I'd invite my mum round for it too, she'd be very happy, as missing seeing The Beatles play live was one of the most disappointments of her teenage years. 

What is your one indulgence?
Ha, I don't have one indulgence, I have many!

Name 3 things nobody knows about you.
I don't know if there are many things people don't know about me - my life is mostly (literally) an open book!
But...I'm afraid of heights, my longest-held ambition is to do a lap round the Top Gear track and I have been known to lock my iPhone in a cupboard because of my Zookeeper addiction.

You Asked Heidi...

A few weeks ago we asked our followers (yes, you lovely people) to send us your questions for the author of the awesome Forever My Girl  Heidi McLaughlin and you didn't let us down. We had a good response to our request and have spent the time going through them. Unfortunately we couldn't use them all, as there were so many, so we chose the questions most of you seemed to be asking. Thank you all and a huge thank you to Heidi for taking time out of her busy schedule to answer them xx

 

How did you come up with the idea of Forever My Girl?
I saw a picture and had this thought of a man trying to win back the love of his life.

Do you have any one in mind when writing your male leads and if so, can you tell us who?
I do. I “cast” each of my characters before writing them. It helps when I have to picture what they look like or what they’re doing. Or even if they were to cut their hair or if it’s a guy, no shave for a week. For Liam, I used Stephen Amell and for Ryan, who you'll meet in Lost In You,  Colton Hayes.

Can you tell us anything about the new project you're working on?
I just finished a stand alone called Lost in You. It’s a new adult/contemp/coming of age novel. I’m hoping to have it out this spring and will be releasing the book cover in the next few days.

Where do you get your inspiration from for your books?
Inspiration usually comes from images or music, real life events and sometimes news. I like to take situations and see what I can do with them in my head.

What was the first book you read?
Um… Dr. Seuss? I don’t really know. My grandma was huge on books so we were always reading.

Have you a favourite book that you keep going back to?
Not really to read, but I do have a set of books that I go to for reference. I want to make sure that if I have a similar scene that I’m making it different and unique to me.

If we looked on your bookcase which authors would we find?
The question is who wouldn't you find. Kimberly Derting, Dan Wells, Jillian Dodd, Abbi Glines, Kiki Hamilton, Lauren Oliver Courtney Summers, Jenny Han, Jessi Kirby – I have just about everything. 

Which do you prefer, books or kindle?
Both, actually. I’ll read a book before going to bed and pick up my kindle and read for an hour or so in bed. It’s the best of both worlds for me.

Apart from books what do you and your beta reader, Yvette, have in common?
Music, movies, life. We are genuinely best friends.

We all have at least one guilty pleasure, what is yours?
Hmm… tough one. I guess I’d have to say cake or cookies, anything sweet, really.
and now for the main question everyone wants to know...

When will book two of The Beaumont series be out?
My Unexpected Forever  will be out… sorry, I wish I could tell you, but I can’t. I will say it will be out this summer so that means by September 22^nd, which just so happens to be the first day of fall.

All we can say is...hurry up September!!! But in the meantime we have Lost In You  to look forward too.

Take a Chance on the Artist and the Popstar.

I decided to check this book out after the author followed me on twitter. I liked what I saw, bought it and I'm glad I did. I needed something completely different to all the bad boy/HEA/Fifty Shades type books I've been reading lately and Martha's Medicine certainly ticks all those boxes, there are very little swear words and no sex/love scenes at all. At this point some of you may stop and think "oh, too tame for me" but PLEASE take a chance and read this book, you won't be disappointed. A lovely, funny and witty tale of finding friends and one's self in the unlikeliest of places, definitely worthy of a re-read.
The author has a style of writing that made me feel like I was watching a movie, Richard Curtis-style, rather than reading her debut novel. (Please, please make this into a movie!) I could actually visualize Martha's house, see her walking over the Scottish heather covered hills with Patrick the pheasant following her - who knew a pheasant could stir up that much emotion in me?! I loved the chemistry and banter between the main characters, Martha and Danny and felt like I actually knew them. I found myself chuckling to myself practically all the way through and cheering at the small, but major, achievements won by them both, although I did shout out loud at my kindle a few times and cry! The ending was a bit surprising, not what I expected, does this mean there could be a second book? Maybe, maybe not not I don't know, but I do know I can't wait to read more from C C McMillan.

Why did more people not realise that sometimes solitude and liking yourself was the real antidote to life's problems?

Not everyone needs to get something for themselves from everything they do.

It was one of those clear spring days when every breath coming in through your nostrils felt like toothpaste in your lungs.

You could be blissfully happy and a heck of a lot more content on your own. Look at Cliff Richard.

An Interview with RebelYve and an Exclusive on Liam Page!!!

Yesterday we said we had something special for you and we have...

When we asked Heidi McLaughlin, author of Forever My Girl-The Beaumont Series, for an interview we were beside ourselves when she agreed, as you can imagine. However, she suggested that we also interview her beta reader, known on twitter as RebelYve. As Heidi explained no one ever interviews the beta and they hold ALL the secrets!!

So get yourselves comfy with a cuppa, some choccy biscuits and see what RebelYve had to say, oh...and don't forget about that Liam exclusive!

First of all do we call you RebelYve or would you prefer something else?
You can call me Yvette, RebelYve is my twitter handle and you can follow me there - you can regularly find me tweeting with Heidi about The Beaumont Series  and Lost in You  which is her current standalone WIP.

Yvette, for those of us who don't know, could you explain what a beta reader does?
A beta reader is someone who pre-reads a story while it's still in draft form and provides feedback on their initial thoughts, what works well and what doesn't. It's someone who the author can trust completely to give honest feedback. A beta shouldn't be afraid to give both positive and constructive criticism. If something doesn't work whether that be the way a scene is written, or the chemistry between two lead characters, then it's down to the beta to point that out. And it's not about saying "I don't like this..." or "that doesn't make sense..." a beta needs to explain why they think something doesn't work and give reasons for suggesting changes. Very often, an author can be blind to things that can be obvious to others, because they wrote that chapter, it's their words on a page. A beta is that independent fresh pair of eyes that can pick up on these things. I would also say that a beta is not an editor and I don't necessarily correct spelling, grammar or punctuation. My number one priority to Heidi as her beta is to be honest and to provide feedback both good and bad. An author has to trust her beta and vice versa.

How did you become a beta reader?
Heidi asked me to be involved and pre-read her first novel and give her honest feedback. I started out as her pre-reader and as time went on, I became more involved. In all honesty, it's not something I would do for anyone. I need to really know the author and understand their vision so that I am able to give honest feedback.

How did you meet Heidi?
Believe it or not, online. We both had a mutual interest in a certain vegetarian vampire and ended up commenting on the same message board. We found out we had the same things in common and, more importantly, the same personalities and our friendship pretty much grew from there.

Which of Heidi's male characters is your favourite?
Hands down, Harrison. Don't get me wrong, I love Liam and Ryan (who is the lead male character in Heidi's current WIP, Lost In You); but Harrison has got that extra something about him that just has me swooning at his feet. I bug Heidi daily to send me some Harrison to keep my obsession at a premium!

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?
Wow, tough question. Not including any of Heidi's characters, I have a few and I'll be honest, it does change from time to time. At the moment, I'm crushing on Josh Bennett from The Sea of Tranquility, Will Cooper from the Slammed series and Jase Garrett from My Life Next Door. Plus I've got the fan favourites, such as Four (Divergent), Jay (Body Finder Series) and Gray (First Comes Love). I've just finished reading Me Before You by JoJo Moyes and I have a special love for Will Traynor. Those who have read it will know what I mean.

Are you interested in writing yourself?
In a word, no! I just haven't got the discipline to write every day. Plus, my working day is pretty long so I just wouldn't have the time. I live vicariously through Heidi's stories and that's good enough for me.

How long does it take you to read a book ?
On average about 3 days, depending on the length. I'm a fast reader, so can normally get through a book within a week.

As a beta have you, or would you, suggest that a particular scene shouldn't be in the finished book or suggest a different way of writing it?
Yes, all the time. That's one of the great things about the dynamics myself and Heidi have. If I don't think a scene is working, or if I think it can benefit from having something added, I'll tell her. Sometimes, I'll suggest a paragraph or wording to add and leave it up to Heidi as to whether she wants to make the change or not. It's one of the most important things of being a beta and a key role of being a pre-reader. You are, effectively, the test audience for the story. It's like piloting something - if there are changes you think could be made that will make it better, then you should suggest them, for sure. In fact, there is a particular chapter that Heidi sent me recently for Lost in You, that I felt needed to be changed and suggested Heidi revisited part of it. After some brainstorming, a revised chapter was sent to me the next day.

Can you tell us a few things about Liam Page that we don't already know?
I can actually give you an exclusive about Liam. You may know that Heidi ran a competition on her Facebook page to name Liam's band. After receiving hundreds of suggestions and narrowing it down to a shortlist of six which people could vote on, I can exclusively reveal that Liam's band is called... 4225 West. We're very excited by it and certainly feel it fits in well with the story.

How much can you tell us about Harrison James?
Hmmm, let me think. Harrison is not as he initially seems. The old adage "Never judge a book by its cover" definitely applies to him and he has all these hidden depths that just makes you fall in love with him. He's almost a dichotomy and definitely an intricate character and Heidi writes him so well. Whereas with Liam, what you see is what you get, with Harrison, you need to delve a little deeper to find out what makes him tick. Every time I get a new chapter I instantly fall in love with him more.

When not beta reading how do you wind down?
I read. A lot! Most of my time is spent on a train and I have so many books on my 'to read' list on my Kindle. I love the fact that you can lose yourself in a story. There are some books out there that stay with me long after I've finished them.

And finally...
Can we have Harrison please? We did say please ;-)
I'll make you a deal. I'll let you have Harrison when Heidi's ready to unleash him on the general public. For now, though, I'll continue to nurture him. You'll thank me for it, I promise. He's definitely worth the wait...
