What they say:
'Karmen Moncrille's name has been known throughout the world since the age of sixteen when her first book shot to the top of the bestseller's list. Now everything she writes is an instant hit, and her legions of devoted fans eagerly await her next release. The mysterious Karmen always blamed debilitating panic attacks as the reason she avoided publicity and has become a recluse. Which is exactly what she wants the world to think. Only Karmen knows the truth behind her introverted nature. Terrified of being asked where her ideas come from, she fears being branded a raving lunatic. Now just a week before her twenty-third birthday, Karmen's world implodes. The madness that haunts her dreams spills over to her reality and she questions her sanity. Suddenly everything has changed and now the world will transform with her. Her last book will unleash the truth and alter mankind forever. Is Karmen's ability to write a gift or a curse? She's about to find out if her entire life is a lie. And why she was destined to write it.'

Not having read any of Ashley Fontainne's books before I didn't know what to expect.
The Lie  starts with a demonic sacrificial ritual and the next few chapters are dedicated to different characters, events and points in time before bringing us up to present time. I have to admit I did get a bit confused with this at first but as the story unfolded I found myself thinking back and piecing together the past with the present, to fit the missing pieces of The Lie that Karmen has been living all of her life.

I did find the story a bit slow at the beginning but don't let that put you off as it did redeem itself pretty quickly and made for a tense and nail biting read, especially towards the end. There were some unexpected twists and turn that left me thinking 'What the HELLL just happened there???' while trying to play catch up with the next unexpected turn.

I really liked the supernatural feel to the story. It reminded me a bit of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Supernatural rolled into one (I'm a big fan Buffy, Angel & co. and those Winchester brothers!) only instead of vampires there are demons.

The Lie  ends in a sort of cliff hanger way which makes me hope this is only an introduction to what could be an exciting and tense series.

If you like your reads with a supernatural feel, sinister demons and climactic tension then The Lie is the book for you.

  2. Awesome book! Ashley is truly a gifted writer, and I couldn't help but imagine her as the female protagonist, giving it a *real* feel, even while having a paranormal edge. As you, I found myself biting my nail several times. :)
