College graduate Josephine
“Josie” Jackson answers ‘yes’ to the question on a survey while visiting an Old
West tourist trap. The next morning, she wakes up in Indian Territory in the
1840s, where she’s given a mission to complete before she can return to her
time: to reset history by finding and stopping the man responsible for a
horrific massacre.
It seems easy enough, until she
discovers that three other women have been sent back to the same time period.
When Josie uncovers what happened to them, she realizes the chances of her
getting out of the past alive are not good.
To survive, she’ll have to
trust the very man she’s there to stop, someone who has every reason to
distrust her and only one reason to help her - to prove he’s not the monster
she claims he’ll become.

The Inspiration Behind the History Interrupted Series.
I’m asked a lot about where I find my
inspiration. The truth is kind of hard … I guess I live in a state of
hyper-inspiration, where everything from random thoughts, someone’s words,
inanimate objects, television … pretty much anything and everything around me
stimulates my imagination. I’m a huge fan of history and unsovled mysteries in
history.
For my latest series about to launch (History Interrupted), I had just seen The Lone Ranger movie and decided I
needed to write something set in the Wild West. I’m also obsessed with Doctor
Who, and I loved the idea of a relationship between a master puppeteer (the
Doctor) and his companion, a woman who travels through time and space for the
adventure. Add that to the fact I’m a huge fan of history (specifically
unsolved mysteries in history) and I had a super awesome premise for a new
series.
“West,” the first book in the History Interrupted time travel series, is
about a somewhat naïve and idealistic college graduate, Josie, who wants to go
back in time and change history in order to save lives. She meets a mysterious
figure who convinces her it’ll be like a vacation, a fun adventure for a couple
of weeks, with the bonus of helping people.
She does it, not knowing the puppet
master has other plans for her. Only when she’s in the 1840s is she told the
truth: he can send her back in time but can’t bring her back. He also did a
little involuntary brain surgery on her and gave her two specific skills: a universal
translator that allows her to speak to anyone in any language and an empathic
memory chip that lets her see the thoughts and memories of the person closest
to her.
She’s basically stuck working for him but
can use these two skills to help her survive often-hostile environments. In
each book, he sends her a little further back in time.
In the second book, “East,” she goes back
to the era of Mongol conquest. I chose this period because I was intrigued by a
podcast I listened to (Hardcore History by Dan Carlin) about Genghis Khan and
thought – why not?! The Mongol conquest was an intriguing tale about how a
handful of impoverished herders ended up taking over most of the known world in
less than a quarter of a century.
While in the Mongol Empire, Josie meets
and falls in love with a Mongol warrior, but is manipulated into leaving that
era by the mastermind behind sending her back in time.
In the third book, “North,” she’ll be
sent back to an as-yet undetermined time period, possibly the Viking Era, and
in the fourth book, “South,” she’ll end up in ancient Rome. Her lover will
essentially chase her through history to find her in the third and fourth
books.
As she travels through - and learns about
- these different cultures, she begins to understand what parts of history can
be changed – and what parts shouldn’t. She turns from the bright-eyed idealist
into a more discerning pragmatist whose desire to help people is never lost,
but how she goes about doing it changes the more she learns. At the end of the
series, she learns why the puppet master chose her and sent her through time.
It’s a romantic adventure like no other,
with each book being a self-contained story that also plugs into the much larger
picture of one woman’s journey through time to find herself and the man she
loves.

I'm a big Doctor Who fan so when I read the synopsis I knew I had to read West. Once again I wasn't disappointed. I was sucked into Josie's story right from the off and hooked until the very end...Lizzy, how could you leave it there?? Genius!
Lizzy is famous for her brilliant plot twists that have you gasping out loud in disbelief and hanging onto the edge of your seat but she also has the knack of making you route for the most unlikeliest of characters. If you've read her Rhyn series you'll know what I'm talking about...Darkyn. Right? Well, West is no exception. I found myself warming to a reclusive killer called Fighting Badger!

Apart from the influences of Doctor Who, West also reminded me a little of one of my favourite time travelling tv shows of the 80s, Quantum Leap. Being suddenly thrown into a time and place in somewhere in the past with not much knowledge of why you're there or when you will return to your own time and home, if you'll ever get home, that is!
West has everything you'd expect from a Lizzy Ford novel, feisty kick-ass leading lady, gorgeous sexy leading man (Taylor Handon!) darker characters that strangely draw you to them even when you know you shouldn't, hot, sexy scenes, enough twists & turns to make your head spin & shout 'WTF?' and a cliff hanger ending that makes you cry with frustration when you realise you have to wait til April for the next book! Why, Lizzy? WHY??
If you're a fan of time travel & Doctor Who then this is the book for you. Hell, even if you're not go 1-click it now, you'll love it, trust me!
