In a world where I had no say, violence became my refuge, and nothing else mattered.
Not even my own life.
Until her.
Skyler Bell.
It all started the first time I heard that voice. Giving me hope for tomorrow. My first love was everything all at once.
Consuming.
Maddening.
Forever.
Mine.
Except, I never imagined there were secrets that needed to be shared. Lies that needed to be confessed. Truths that needed to be told.
Demons that needed to be buried.
Once I realized the depth, the longing, the sadness and sorrow in her eyes mirrored mine, it was too late. Love didn't come to me as heartbreak, it came as everything I've ever wanted. Walking away wasn't an option, but it was the only choice I had.

I finally found the price of love and it cost me...
My soul.

My back hit the concrete wall with a thud.
“You got what you wanted, so you can go now. Because I can’t stand fucking looking at you any longer!”
I reached for her on pure impulse. “Skyler—” As soon as she felt my strong arm’s wrap around her waist, she kneed me in the balls.
“We’re even now, because I hate you too.”
Push.
I groaned in pain, and in her fuck-me heels, she took off running toward the exit. Breathing through the dis-comfort for a moment, I hauled ass after her. My boots pounding the wet pavement, chasing her in the pouring rain. Catching up with her outside the back of the dark building.
I gripped her arm and roughly turned her toward me, never expecting what happened next.
“No!” she shouted bloody murder, once again shoving me as hard as she could. She didn’t falter, losing her fucking shit on me. “I loved you!” She ignored the sting I knew her hand must have felt every time it connected with my face and body. Hitting me anywhere she could.
I tried blocking each and every blow, driving her further to push and hit me harder. Taking out every malicious word I’d said to her, and years of pent-up anger with herself, on me.
“I fucking loved you!”
“Cutie, calm the fuck down,” I ordered, trying to grip onto her wrists.
“Fuck you!” she yelled, punching and shoving me more, the closer I came toward her. “You don’t know anything! Nothing!”
“Skyler, enough!”
Raising her hand up to slap me across the face, I gripped onto her wrist and spun her around before she could react. She lost her footing which only made it easier for me to carry her up into my arms. Striding over to the nearest car that appeared abandoned in a secluded corner of the alley.
“Stop it,” I warned, controlling her body from thrashing around. Pissing her off even more.
“You stop it! Put me down!”
And I did, slamming her ass on the hood. Taking ahold of both her wrists with my hand and placing them above her head. I pinned her down, and still she fought with every ounce of courage she had left in her.
“For fucks sake, stop!”
“No!”
“Well then, I’m just gonna havta fuck the fight right out of ya.”
“Don’t you dar—”
My lips crashed onto hers, slipping my tongue into her mouth. Demanding complete and utter control. She weakly thrashed around, and I held her tighter against my chest, kissing her fucking senseless.
Groaning against her lips, “Fuck… I missed you…”

Release Day Blitz: Lucky Scars by Kerry Heavens + 5+* review + excerpt

Title: Lucky Scars
Author: Kerry Heavens
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: July 3, 2018

Synopsis

Not every love story begins with a fiery explosion of lust.
Some are tiny embers of hope that smoulder slowly until the stars align…

I’d been living in a bubble.
It was meant to protect me from the things in life that hurt.
I could live, I could laugh, but at least I didn’t have to love.
Loving was dangerous and I would never do it again.

It was working just fine, until the bubble burst.
It let in danger.
It let in light.
It let in…him.

Unknowingly I’d been living in the dark, feeling my way.
He filled my world with starlight.
He showed me how to move on to the next level.
He made me feel again.

I thought the wounds from the past would never fully heal,
But perhaps they only heal when the time is right.

Sometimes you just have to thank your lucky scars.

With trembling fingers, I tapped at my phone screen, sobbing because I connected the call and then cut it off in my haste. I couldn’t handle technology; I just needed him. I was about to throw in the towel and just sit on the curb and cry when it rang. His stupid face appeared on the screen, and my heart leapt. He knew. He knew I needed him.
Choking at the urgency to hear his voice, I tried again to get my fingers to cooperate, and, finally, they did.
“Hello?” There was pleading in my tone. “Ziggy?
There was a short stretch of silence, and I thought maybe I’d fucked up the call again when suddenly he spoke. “Bea? What’s wrong?”
“Zig—” A sob cut me off.
“Bea, where are you? What’s going on?”
“I need you,” I whispered.
“Tell me where?” he said with a steady determination that filled me with exactly the comfort I needed right then. He was coming. It was going to be ok. I looked up helplessly at my surroundings for a road name I could tell him.
“Um,” I faltered. “I don’t know, I—” Fresh tears ran down my face, and I wiped at them with the back of my hand, only then noticing the blood. “Oh God,” I gasped.
“Bea, please. You’re scaring me. Are you hurt?”
“No,” I assured him quickly. “I just…” I didn’t even know where to start.
“I need to know where you are. Calm down. I’m here. Take a deep breath and try to tell me where I need to go to find you. I’m coming. Okay? Now just tell me where.”
I turned in place, looking for something I knew. I walked these streets every day, and they’d never felt so alien to me. He was the only thing that felt safe right then, but guilt swept over me, and I tried to pull myself together. I must have been freaking him out, and that wasn’t fair. Nothing around me seemed familiar, even though I knew it was; I was so disorientated. I needed to do what he told me and take a breath.
He was coming to get me.
It was ok.
“Dean Street,” I told him as soon as I laid eyes on the street sign, relieved to be tuning back in but feeling so stupid that I was so close to home and couldn’t even focus enough to realise it. “At the Shaftsbury Avenue end, on the corner.”
“I’m coming. Please just tell me you’re okay,” he said desperately into the phone.

A massive 5+ emotion-filled sparkly stars!!!

Lucky Scars captured my attention from the very beginning and by the end it totally captured my heart. I have laughed, cried, shouted and sighed my way through Bea's story.
I have no words to describe just how much I have fallen in love with this book other than I EFFIN LOVED IT!!!!

I'm a huge fan of Kerry Heavens’ work so much so that I don’t read the blurb for her books. I just dive right in as I know I’m in for a hell of a read. And boy, I wasn’t disappointed.
Kerry is a talented genius. She creates flawed, but very real and believable characters, wraps them up in emotional gut-wrenching, gripping plots with a healthy dose of humour and before you know it you're hooked. Her characters take on a life of their own and end up firmly embedded in your heart.

I honestly had trouble put this book down, I was gripped in the highly, emotionally charged plot. One minute I'm  yelling out loud 'No, don’t do it!' willing Bea to take a chance and make her move. The next I'm in bits over a very emotional scene that had my heart hurting so much.

Ziggy! *sighs* My heart both ached and melted for him. I adored the way he looked out for Bea and always seemed to know what she wanted or how she was feeling. I need a Starman in my life!!

Lucky Scars has all the feels, and some, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. 1-click this sparkly gem of a read today.

Release Day Launch: The Way We Burn by M. Leighton + 5+* review + excerpt

Title: THE WAY WE BURN
Author: M. Leighton
Release Date: June 24, 2018

Synopsis

Irresistible attraction.  Unimaginable danger.

I knew from the moment Noah Williamson walked into the diner that he was haunted—deeply haunted—but I couldn’t resist the lure of him. He was gorgeous and fascinating and mysterious, and like a delicate moth to a brilliant blue flame, I was drawn to him. Drawn to his fire.

But if I’d known about his job, about what happened to his wife, I’d have run the other way. Before I got caught up in the red-hot blaze of his life. Before everything in my world got burned to the ground.

It’s too late to run now. I hesitated and that was it. I fell. I fell for him before I knew there was danger in loving him.

Noah once told me that this is the way we burn—together or not at all. At the time, I didn’t know what that meant.

Now I do.

CHAPTER ONE
NOAH

Maryland, eighteen months ago

“Mind going over the story with me one more time?”
I stare at the detective.  I see the disdain in his eyes. I see the disbelief.  He came here with his mind made up.  I’m suspect number one and we both know it.  What we both don’t know is that I did nothing to my wife.  I would never hurt her.  I don’t think I could even if I had to, even if she was trying to hurt me.  She is the only woman I’ve ever loved, the only person whose happiness means more to me than my own.
Except for our daughter.
Her happiness would’ve meant more to me than my own, too.
Would’ve.
Past tense.
Grief slices through my chest like a scalpel.  Clean. Neat.  Surgical.  Like someone is cutting out my heart.
Five months ago, we lost our daughter.  And now I’ve lost Carly.  How the hell is a man supposed to live through something like this?  A child. Then a spouse.  This is the shit nightmares are made of.
And I would know.  I’ve seen nightmares. Up close. Personal.  The kind that sink their teeth in and leave marks. Wounds.  Scars.
Sweat beads on my upper lip.  I’ve never felt such an intense sense of loss, so much pain.  So much helpless, hopeless agony.
A few months ago, I’d have said a person couldn’t bear hurt like this. I’d have said the human body couldn’t take it.
But I’d have been wrong.
It can.
I’m proof.  I’m still alive, still standing.  Damned if I know how, but I am.  Even when I’d rather not be, I am.  And now, on top of everything else, I’m being questioned like a felon.  I’m the primary suspect in my wife’s disappearance, and every second they spend focusing on me is another second she’s further from being found.
But there’s nothing I can do to change that. It’s Basic Detecting 101.  The husband is suspect numero uno.  Why?  Because it usually is the husband. I know that.  I also know there will be no convincing them otherwise.
Maybe if I could split my chest wide open, they’d believe me.  Maybe if they could see what I’m feeling, see the bruised and bleeding thing that used to be my heart, they’d understand. Maybe if they could physically see what this is doing to me, they’d look beyond the obvious.  But outside of that, there’s nothing I can say to make them understand.  That’s why there’s an edge to my voice when I answer this asshole’s questions. I may not be able to change it, but I sure as hell don’t have to like it.
“It’s not a ‘story’, Detective. It’s the truth.  Carly left for work Tuesday morning at seven. She said she had an early meeting.  I texted her at lunch to see if she needed me to bring anything from the store. She didn’t answer.  I haven’t seen or heard from her since that morning.  And that was almost sixty hours ago.”
Sixty hours.  That’s twelve hours after “we’ve got a good chance of finding her”, and twelve hours before “hope for the best, but expect the worst.”  The window is closing.
“Had you two fought before she left?”
There’s a dull throb just above the bridge of my nose. I pinch it between my index finger and thumb.  “No, we hadn’t fought.  We don’t fight anymore.  At all.  I told you we’ve both been recovering from…from…”
I can’t make the words come out. They’re stuck in my throat like tar—black and sticky and foreign.  Bitter.
“The death of your daughter. Right, right.  I feel you,” he placates, making more notes on his pad.  “But they never recovered her body, isn’t that right, Mr. Williamson?”
My eyes snap up to his.  Surely to God he’s not insinuating…
Zero to sixty in one second.  In one sentence.  That’s how long it takes my blood to come to a hard boil. Like lava down a mountainside, it rushes through my veins in a thick, hot river, destroying trees and grass and flowers and life as it goes.  Killing off a little more of what was left of me.
I take a deep breath, striving for cool.  Or even tepid.  Anything but the blazing rage that’s pumping through me.
“Detective, I’m a patient man. I work for the FBI, so I understand how this process works. I also understand that I’m at the top of your list of suspects, so I get it. I get it.  But let me make one thing crystal clear.” I take a step forward.  “My daughter was killed. My child is dead.  So while I have agreed to jump through all your hoops, make no mistake. My tolerance has its limits and you are dangerously close to finding out what happens when my patience runs out.  I’ve got nothing left to lose. Not one thing, so wiping the floor with your smug ass might actually improve my situation.  You feel that?” The last is hissed through teeth clenched so tight my jaws ache. I’m practically spitting down into his face, my chest close enough to bump his if I take a deep enough breath.
I can tell by the set of his lips and the narrowing of his eyes that I’ve pissed him off. But I can also tell that he’s not fool enough to press me one more inch right now. Not one more. It’s there in the way his pupils swell. It’s there in the way his nostrils flare.  He won’t push me.  He’s smarter than that.
My daughter is dead.
My wife is missing.
There’s nothing left.  Nothing that matters. There’s nothing they can take from me or threaten me with.  Surely this pathetic lackey knows what I know from years and years of experience—men like me are unpredictable.
Unpredictable and dangerous.

My Review

*ARC received in return for an honest review

The Way We Burn. A romantic tale of love with suspense. Of love always finding a way.

HOLY SH*t!!!  This has to be the best book EVER from M. Leighton, and I’ve loved every one of hers that I’ve read. And that’s a lot!! It's worth so much more than 5 stars.
I can’t begin to tell you how much I loved this, I’m so blown away by this amazing and epic love story. And what a love story it is. I have sighed, shouted, gasped, yelled out loud, cried and sighed again through The Way We Burn and I have loved every bit of it. I now have a huge book hangover and I don't even care!

Once again Michelle has woven her magic and created a dramatic and gripping plot with such wonderful, but flawed, characters who have barged their way into my head, and heart, and refuse to move.
The suspense, the drama and the twists left me on sitting on the edge of my seat with my mouth gaping in shock, unable to put it down from the very first page until the last. I can usually guess where a plot is going but not this time. The huge plot twists left me floored. A massive high five to Michelle for being able to keep me on my toes. I definitely didn't see them coming!

I want to say so much more, especially how the main characters are drawn to each other from the very beginning, their chemistry burning up the pages, and Noah (O.M.G. Noah! *sighs*) but I don't want to give anything away. Why waste time reading this review when you could be finding out for yourself?

If you love your romance with a lot of suspense, gripping plots, burning chemistry and twists so huge you’re left reeling then The Way We Burn is definitely the book for you. You won’t be disappointed. Trust me. Get 1-clicking now and see if you too can survive the flames.

An absolutely, definitely, MUST read!!!!
